The Daily Rant April 4: CPU Madness

General NewsIn the computer industry, the rave used to be CPU speed. Faster was better, usually. Today, we have lots of family names, each more indistinguishable than the next. I propose the Fubar Family. Read more for the specs.

Speed: 29 Furlongs Per Fortnight
Bitness: Many
FrontSide Bus: Yes
Cores: Fundamental
Power Consumption: Lots
Math Processing: Yes
Socket: Clamped In
Heat Sink: Congress
Backwards Compatibility: Backwards, Yes; Compatibility Depends on Temperament
Instruction Set: Yes
Chip Set Availability: With Onion Dip
Threads: Cotton, Silk
Virtualization: Ephemeral

If there are mountain ranges or biblical characters, there may be a CPU name in them. Rivers, lakes, it doesn't matter, and no one understands them or can keep track of them without tables listing what they are. It's not only confusing, but a completely useless method of trying to distinguish features. Mehalem....Penryn... sound like new drugs from Pfizer.
